Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) is not relenting in its drive toward educating residents of Kwara State on their tax responsibilities and the core mandate of the Service.
A business owner does not need to seek the consent of KW-IRS before starting a business in the State. However, registration of business with the KW-IRS is required to be done within six months of commencement of business in fulfilment of the provision of the law.
Acronym “PAYE” which means Pay-As-You-Earn, is a form of Personal Income Tax (PIT), paid by people in formal employment, where the appropriate tax is deducted at source before the employees get paid.
Personal Income Tax (PIT) is the tax levied on all income sources of an individual.
It is possible to apply for Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) at KW-IRS manually and electronically. For the option of manual TCC application, taxpayers are expected to write an application letter, addressed to the Executive Chairman, KW-IRS with evidence of payment of N1, 000.00 application fee and attachment of evidence of tax remittance or payment in the last 3years or such applicant be assessed for the last 3years.
For electronic TCC application, taxpayers only need to apply online for free on KW-IRS SELF SERVICE PORTAL through selfservice.kwirs.com.
Except there is under remittance or deduction on a taxpayer whose PAYE is being remitted monthly, it is not expected to pay another tax. Although, where it is established that a taxpayer has an additional undisclosed source of income, payment of tax on such other source (s) would be required.
N1, 000.00 fee for manual application is still applicable, even if no additional source of income or under remittance or deduction is established.
Tax Clearance Certificates issued by the KW-IRS can be electronically verified, using the QR code on the certificates or by checking with the certificate number via irs.kw.gov.ng/confirm-tcc/.
KW-IRS advocacy on the use of available online platforms is to encourage direct dealing with KW-IRS for all tax-related transactions and to discourage touting of any sort.
It is the right of taxpayers to ensure the amount paid corresponds with receipts or documents issued.
Breach attempt or fraudulent acts by any dissident staff of KW-IRS or at any revenue point across the State, are to be reported to the Executive Chairman, KW-IRS through any of the communication channels of the Service for required action.
Land charge is chargeable for the use and occupation of land both titled and untitled. And it is payable to the State Government. While the Tenement rate is the annual charges on a built-up area on the land.
Titles to land are vested in the executive Governor of the State, in essence, every holder of title or occupier of any piece of land holds it in trust for the Governor and is therefore liable to pay land charge and tenement rate.
The assessment for payment of land charge is determined by the land size and land value. Rates differ depending on the usage i.e. as Residence, Fuel Station, Agricultural, Religious, Commercial, etc.
Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KW-GIS) raises all lands and property-related bills, while KW-IRS serves and collects all taxes due on lands and properties.
Right of Occupancy (R of O) is a prerequisite for obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), which affords owners the legal ownership of their land. This also prevents the government from confiscating such land or property without compensation.
Every agency of Government in Kwara State collaborates to ensure improved revenue generation for Kwara State.
KW-IRS offices and payment points are situated strategically all across the State.
All revenue payments are to be made into the Kwara State Government IGR Accounts through the online payment platforms approved by the State (REMITA, QUICKTELLER, PAYARENA) and others to be communicated in due course.
