The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has met with stakeholders in Kwara State to mainstream on the use of a “single interstate road tax sticker” and “single haulage fee” to eliminate the issue of double or multiple taxes paid across Nigerian states.
The apex tax regulatory body said the interface with stakeholders at the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) head office on Thursday, February 16, 2023, was borne out of the need to mainstream, regulate and strengthen relations on enforcement procedures via the use of the online application and physical enforcement on the enumeration of stickers across the 36 states of the federation, including Abuja, and to also serve as a feedback mechanism from the field of practice.
In her opening remark, the Executive Chairman of KW-IRS, Shade Omoniyi expressed her joy on the laudable development by the JTB while imploring the stakeholders to be the agents of change.
The team lead of the JTB and his team in their presentations, explained procedures and listened to feedback from participants drawn from across agencies, ministries and organisations including the Federal Road Safety Commission, Heavy Duty & Haulage Transport Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL Plc.), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), and Market Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN), National Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employee. Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Kwara State Signage and Advertisement Agency, Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency and some consultants.
Other areas discussed by his team during the JTB presentation included “system and process overview of the initiative, enumeration module, roles of enforcers, enforcement strategy, enforcement application and enforcement incentives”.
In her feedback, the Executive Chairman emphasised that the JTB is not introducing new tax rates, but explained that the development is just new modalities to ease the burden of the populace.
During the question and answer session, participants asked various questions and expressed their views on the Engagement exercise with Associations. Chairman MAN, Kogi and Kwara State Branch, expressed that the role of Environmental Scanning and Implementation cannot be over emphasised in policy making.
The closing remarks was done by Director General, KWASA, Mr Omotayo Olorunshola, appreciated the JTB and KW-IRS for organizing the sensitisation program.
In attendance were Director Admin and Operation, Director Legal and Compliance, Representatives of Ministry of Business Innovation and Technology and other members of staff of KW-IRS.
