As part of its ongoing tax advocacy efforts, the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) organized a one-day seminar for the 16 newly elected Local Government Chairmen in Kwara State, today, Thursday, 10th October, 2024, at its Corporate Head Office in Ilorin.
In her welcome address, the Executive Chairman, KW-IRS, Shade Omoniyi, congratulated the newly elected Chairmen and encouraged them to explore innovative ways of generating revenue in their respective Local Governments for the betterment of the State. She emphasized the importance of respecting the autonomy and mandate entrusted to them for effective governance.
During her presentation, Omoniyi briefed the Chairmen on the key tax reforms proposed by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.She also stressed the importance of building a harmonious relationship between KW-IRS and the 16 Local Governments to enhance and streamline revenue collection in the State.
The seminar featured insightful presentations by Taofiq Alabi on “State and Local Government Revenue Generation with Emphasis on the Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Act, 2015”, and Lukman Mustapha, Esq. on the “Legal Framework for KW-IRS and Local Government Revenue Committees.” The goal of the presentations was to enlighten the Chairmen on the taxes and levies applicable to Local Governments and the legal backing for revenue generation, with a view to boosting the State’s revenue.
The seminar provided a platform for engaging discussions on exploring ways to maximize revenue generation, eliminate double taxation, clarify pertinent areas on revenue generation and foster a more effective tax administration system in the State. Highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates to attendees by KW-IRS Executive Chairman.
In his closing remarks, the Chairman, Ifelodun Local Government, Honourable Femi Yusuf, speaking on behalf of the newly elected Chairmen, expressed gratitude to the management of KW-IRS for the educative and engaging seminar. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship with KW-IRS and encouraged his colleagues to prioritize sensitization on revenue-related matters.
In attendance at the seminar were the 16 Local Government Chairmen; KW-IRS Directors, Legal and Compliance, Shehu Abdullahi; Income Tax, Mohammed Usman; MDAs, Omotayo Ayinla and some management staff.
