The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) joined other corporate organisations globally to mark the 2026 Internal Audit Awareness Month, themed “Moving from Compliance to Insight: Advancing the Role of Internal Audit” from Tuesday 5th to Friday, 8th May, 2026 at its corporate head office, GRA, Ilorin.
The celebration kicked off with a training session, where the Head, Internal Audit Department, Yinka Usman welcomed attendees and explained that the purpose of the event was to underscore the role of internal audit in the organisation, stating that this year’s theme focuses on the importance of advancing and transforming from compliance to insight by fostering engagement and partnership, thereby enhancing the organisation’s performance.
Giving her opening address, the Executive Chairman, Shade Omoniyi, commended the Internal Audit Department for its unwavering commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in ensuring compliance. She encouraged the Department to move beyond a compliance-driven approach to one that delivers deeper insights, while calling on all staff to continue to play their part in strengthening controls and processes towards promoting the overall organisational efficiency.

The training which was attended by members of KW-IRS Top Management, Heads of Departments, and selected staff, featured two paper presentations titled “Moving from Compliance to Insight: Advancing the Role of Internal Audit” and “The Effect of Non-Compliance on the Overall Achievement of the Service” delivered by the Head, Tax Assessment, Abdullahi Gegele, and the SA to the Executive Chairman, Taofiq Alabi respectively. The presentations underscored a significant shift in the role of Internal Audit from traditional compliance-focused practices toward a more strategic and value-driven approach. The speakers highlighted collaboration across departments as a key driver of organisational success.
There were comments and recommendations by participants, and a vote of thanks by Fatima Gada, a staff member of Internal Audit Department, who expressed appreciation to the Executive Chairman, Directors, Heads of Departments, participants and the organisers.
The Internal Audit team then proceeded on a department-by-department visit to educate the staff on the essence of the exercise, while a virtual session was organised for staff in the Area Offices, ensuring inclusive engagement and involvement of all staff regardless of location.
Highlights of the event were the presentation of gifts to staff who gave correct answers to questions asked by the team during the departmental visits, and a photo session.
