In preparation for the implementation of the tax reforms proposed by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, and in line with its continuous efforts to enhance staff capacity development, the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) organized a two-day training for one hundred members of its workforce from 10th to 11th December, 2024.

The training which focused on Tax Audit & Investigation and the Impact of the Nigeria Tax Reform Bills, took place at the KW-IRS corporate head office in Ilorin and was facilitated by Moore Bishop and Rooks.

In his welcome address, the Director, Admin and Operations, Yusuf La-Kadri, stated that the training was specially selected considering the ongoing discussions on proposed tax reforms in the country to enable KW-IRS staff as tax administrators to be abreast of happenings in the Nigerian tax space and be adequately prepared. He introduced the facilitator as a seasoned tax consultant and one of the best in terms of Personal Income Tax. He therefore urged participants to pay rapt attention and grasp as much as they can from the training.

Also lending his voice, the Director, Income Tax, Mohammed Usman stated that the training was very timely, especially in the era of tax reforms, adding that tax audit is a core aspect of the tax system. The MDAs Director, Omotayo Ayinla also encouraged participants to seize the opportunity of the training to improve themselves and enhance their input on the job.

The Lead Facilitator, Yomi Adewale took participants through an Overview of Nigeria Tax Laws, highlighting key considerations in the computation of Personal Income Tax and identifying common compliance challenges as well as strategies to address the challenges. She also trained the staff on Tax Audit and Investigation Techniques, explaining some important aspects of tax audits such as the types, triggers, techniques and key skills for effective tax audits.

Making his presentation on Tax Policy and Legislative Changes, the second facilitator, Sunday Anani spoke extensively on the key proposals of the Nigeria Tax Bill underlining the proposed Value Added Tax and Personal Income Tax reforms. Furthermore, Anani exposed participants to Financial Analysis and the Interpretation Skills needed as tax auditors.

The training featured various practical sessions which allowed participants to interact and engage in critical thinking in order to provide answers to the technical questions posed by the facilitators.

At the end of the training, the Head, Human Resources, Iyabo Salawudeen appreciated the facilitators and charged participants to ensure that they bring all the lessons learnt during the training to bear on their jobs.
