In its resolve to integrate quality tax education in younger generations in Kwara State, the First and Second Rounds of the 2021 Tax Club Quiz Competition for Secondary Schools in the State has commenced, with the Kwara North Senatorial District, on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th July 2021. The competition, organized by the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), is in collaboration with the State’s Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development
The competition for the year 2021, holds, in both virtual and physical forms.
For Kwara North Senatorial Districts, the competition was designed to hold at two locations; Ilesha Baruba and Lafiagi.The Kwara North edition of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) competition, ended with six (6) schools, qualifying to the semi-finals out of the twenty-two (22) schools that expressed interest in the competition from the Kwara North.
Earlier in the year, an 8-man committee, was constituted by the Executive Chairman, KW-IRS, Shade Omoniyi, all consist of staff of KW-IRS, with Babatunde Salawu as the Chairman and Titilayomi Ogunwale, as the convener of the Tax Club Quiz Competition project for KW-IRS.
The committee, saddled with the responsibility of organizing Tax Advocacy programmes in the State, alongside the Corporate Affairs and IT Departments of the Service, led its members and the representative of the department of School Services, Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Alalade R., to Ilesha Baruba and Lafiagi, the host towns of the first leg of the 2021 competition for Kwara North.
Giving his address, the Emir of Ilesha Baruba, HRH. Prof. Halidu Abubakar welcomed the visiting team and expressed appreciation to the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq led administration for his engagement and commitment towards education, socio-cultural, and grassroots development. He commended the vision of the Governor for a system of government that works for all.
HRH. Prof. Halidu also thanked the Executive Chairman of KW-IRS, Shade Omoniyi, for her commitment and efforts in assisting with the mobilization of revenue for the development of the State. “The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), remains the first across Nigeria to transform its old Board of Internal Revenue Agency into a fully functional State Internal Revenue Service with a clear-cut mandate backed up by Kwara State Revenue Administration Law No 6 of 22 June 2015” the monarch stated.
He also commended the Service for considering it necessary to nurture a tax compliant society through the tax club quiz competition, describing the cause as an act of commitment and devotion to quality service delivery to the State in general.
The Government Secondary School, Ilesha Baruba played host to the shortlisted secondary schools from both Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas of the State. A total number of eight (8) schools from the districts featured in the Computer Based Test, under strict compliance to the Covid-19 safety measures and after the two (2) rounds of the Computer-Based Test, two (2) schools; Unique College, Kaiama, and the host school, Government Secondary School, Ilesha Baruba emerged qualifiers to the semi-finals of the competition from Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas.
Similarly, the team was received by the Provost, Kwara State College of Education, (Technical), Lafiagi, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim, on Tuesday 6th July 2021, where the tax club quiz competition scheduled for Edu and Patigi Local Government Areas of the Kwara North, was conducted. The CBT had a total number of fourteen (14) Secondary Schools, with four (4) schools namely, Government Secondary School Lafiagi, Ave Maria Catholic Secondary School, Lafiagi, The Apostolic Church Secondary School, Patigi and Shepherd Senior Secondary School, Lafiagi from both Edu and Patigi Local Government Areas respectively, emerged winners to the semi-final stage and will be joining their counterparts from Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas for the next rounds.
The 2021 KW-IRS Tax Club Quiz Competition’s First and Second Rounds for Secondary Schools in the Kwara North Senatorial District had, therefore, produced six (6) semi-finalists, while Secondary Schools in both Kwara South and Central will take their respective chances on Thursday 8th and Monday 12th July 2021 in Omupo Anglican Secondary School, and the KW-IRS CBT Centre, Trillium School, Ilorin, Kwara State respectively.
The ongoing preliminary stages of the 2021 Tax Club Quiz Competition are to produce six (6) schools from each of the three senatorial districts for the semi-finals, scheduled to hold a few months from now, with various prizes set aside to be won for schools’ projects and academic pursuits of participants that emerged overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.
The establishment of Tax Club in schools in the State aims at ensuring students have clear understanding of the role of tax in the development of an economy; Create interactive atmospheres for students to share ideas and contribute positively to the economic development of the country and state; Compete positively in Schools debate and quiz; Build careers in taxation and other related areas of study, and get rewarded for active and excellent performance.
