In its effort to raise a tax-compliant generation and continue to build a tax-informed citizen, the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development has commenced the 2022 Tax Club Quiz Competition (TCQC) for all Secondary Schools in Kwara State.
The competition for the year 2022 had 219 (Two Hundred and Nineteen) schools expressed interest in the competition across the three senatorial districts of the State against 142 schools recorded in the year 2021.
Kwara South, Kwara North and Kwara Central senatorial districts registered 82 schools, 53 schools and 84 schools respectively for the competition which kick-started its preliminary stage at Okeya-Ipo High School, Okeya-Ipo in Irepodun Local Government Area of the State on the 1st of July, 2022 for all registered schools in Kwara South. Government Unity Secondary School, Kaiama in Kaiama Local Government Area and Kwara State College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi in Edu Local Government Area of the State, hosted schools from Kwara North One, which comprised Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas and schools from Kwara North Two, which comprised Edu, Patigi and Moro Local Government Areas on the 4th and 5th of July, 2022.
Registered schools from Kwara Central converged at the KW-IRS office, phase III, located at New Yidi Road, Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday 6th of July, 2022 to wrap up the preliminary stage of the 2022 Tax Club Quiz Competition.
The Computer Based Tax Quiz Competition is one of the reforms of KW-IRS under the current administration to give school children in the State not only the opportunity to acquire knowledge of taxation, but also Information Technology.
The preliminary stage ran between 1st and 6th of July, 2022 and witnessed the emergence of 18 schools as semi- finalists.
From the Kwara South, Aperan Comprehensive College, Omu-Aran; Mustapha Standard College, Offa; Oro Muslim High School, Oro; U.M.C.A. Secondary School, Share; ECWA Secondary School, WokoWomu, Omu-Aran and Kwara College of Education Model Secondary School, Oro emerged the best 6 schools.
Kwara North Semi-finalists are Shepherd Secondary School, Lafiagi; The Apostolic Church School, Patigi; Baptist Model High School, Kaiama; Government Secondary School, Lafiagi; Unique College, Kaiama and Government Secondary School, Tunga Aboki, Kaiama.
While Kwara Central produced Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Model College, Ilorin; Stepping Stone College, Ilorin; Muslim Model Secondary School, Ilorin; Ebenezer High School, Gaa-Akanbi, Ilorin; Unilorin Secondary School, Adewole, Ilorin and Islamic College, Hajj Camp, Ilorin as the top six schools to compete with other semi-finalists from the Kwara South and North Senatorial Districts.
Giving their separate remarks during the competition, the Executive Chairman, KW-IRS, Shade Omoniyi reiterated that, the competition was aimed at nurturing young school children on the importance of tax compliance to the State. She encouraged all participating schools and young ones to learn the culture of tax payment, so as to impact their parents and people around them positively even now as school children before they become income earners and taxpayers.
Shade Omoniyi appreciated all coordinating teachers and schools that expressed interest in the 2022 tax club quiz competition, for taking their time in building up young ones in acceptable norms in the society, encouraging the students to be of good conduct and see the competition beyond prize-winning, rather as an avenue to learn how to be responsible citizens.
Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs Mary Kemi Adeosun, who was represented by Mrs. Roseline Ayanshola of the Ministry lauded the continuous innovative activity of KW-IRS under the leadership of Shade Omoniyi, adding that, activities of KW-IRS is in line with the developmental agenda of the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq led administration. Adeosun charged all participating students to always be of good character and be open to learning only what would improve and develop them, their environment and the State at large.
Highlights of the preliminary stage of the 2022 tax club quiz competition include visitation to the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Mohammed Kudu Kawu and Oludopo of Okeya-Ipo, Oba Saheed Giwa Opadoye. Other activities include the presentation of educative materials to all participating students and official letters of invitation to the 18 semi-finalists.
The Semi-Final and Grand Finale of the 2022 Tax Club Quiz Competition hold on the 3rd of November 2022, with a grand prize of N2,500,000.00 (Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only) to be won by the overall winner.
