The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS) team led by the Executive Chairman, Dr Muritala Awodun held a meeting with the representatives of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) including Alh Abdullahi Gidado and Alh Jimoh Oloduku, on 7 January 2015 at the KW-IRS Head Office.
At the meeting, Dr Awodun said the vision of KW-IRS is to mobilize revenue for the strategic development of Kwara State. He assured the representatives of the Unions that the State Government’s proposal to harmonise tax collection between agencies does not include their Union dues and fees.
Dr Awodun enlightened the representatives of the Unions of the importance of tax especially in Nigeria today where the fall in oil prices has reduced and destabilised the country’s revenue. He added that payment of tax is compulsory for all adult citizens. He also explained to the representatives of the Unions that the new tax payment process is intended to ensure that tax collected are remitted to the appropriate government coffers.
The Unions expressed relief over the clarification made by the Chairman, KW-IRS. They added that the meeting has cleared some of their doubts and concerns and therefore pledge their allegiance to KW-IRS and the State in particular.
Dr Awodun thanked the representatives of the Unions for the visit and appealed to them for support and collaboration. He assured the representatives of the Union that KW-IRS will always carry the Unions’ Executives along when decisions are made.
